Position: Journeyman Electrician

 

Classification: Classified/Support/Unlicensed

Terms of Employment: Full Time – 219 Days

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

This is an unlicensed position assigned to the classified salary schedule.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision installs, repairs, overhauls and maintains residential, commercial

and industrial electrical, fire alarm, telephone and data systems and equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans layout of, and installs conduit, wiring and electrical apparatus in buildings; including but not limited to: light fixtures, motors, pumps, transformers, shop equipment and the like to ensure quality installations.
  • Tests and Diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus such as transformers, motors, pumps light fixtures and other electrical equipment as needed.
  • Replaces faulty electrical components of buildings and machinery including damaged or broken wires or cables, relays, contactors, switches, motor, starters and controls and the like.
  • Diagnoses and repairs faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards.
  • Diagnoses and replaces faulty mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components of buildings and machinery.
  • Maintains, tests, programs and repairs District Fire Alarm Systems, including installation of new components and devices.
  • Maintains, tests, programs and repairs District Telephone Systems, including installation of new components and devices.
  • Installs, tests, maintains and repairs District data-communications cabling and devices.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the International Building Codes, NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code, NFPA 70E – Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, NFPA-72 – National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, TIA/EIA Telecommunications Building Wiring Standards and other relevant codes and standards; latest edition as adopted by local jurisdiction.
  • Maintains a job log on all projects.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and tools associated with the trade.
  • Purchases supplies after complete planning and according to price quote and bidding procedures under supervision of supervisor.
  • Work with and cross train to assist coworkers in other trades, i.e. carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, etc.
  • Assumes all other duties and tasks as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a Journeyman Electrician; defined as one with a minimum of four documented years of field experience in residential, commercial and industrial electrical work. Classroom instruction, while encouraged, does not count towards the four years of field experience.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, codes and other material pertinent to construction.
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, means and methods.
  • Knowledge of building components and systems.
  • Basic computer skills in work processing, spreadsheet and email programs using Windows 7; experience with temperature control programs is a plus.
  • Good oral and written communication skills; able to read and interpret written information.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local building codes, OSHA, NFPA, IBC, Life Safety and hazardous materials.
  • Shall be certified, or within twelve (12) months of appointment, obtain a Type “F” Certificate of Registration from the Nevada State Fire Marshal.
  • Maintains personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.
  • The ability to work on remote sites for long periods of time, full-time if necessary and over-time as required.

 

CERTIFICATES:    

  • Type “F” Certificate of Registration
  • Vertical Communications for Telephone Installation/Programming
  • 10 Hour OSHA Construction Safety & Health Card
  • Valid State of Nevada Driver’s License.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:    

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an

  • Medium/Heavy - Exert force 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently, or up 10-20 lbs. constantly. Involves significant stand/walk/push/pull.
  1. Physical Demands:
  • Frequent climbing, balancing, crouching, crawling, stooping, reaching, kneeling, handling, repetitive fine motor activities, talking and hearing.
  1. Vision:
  • Frequent near and far acuity, depth perception and color vision.
  1. Environmental Conditions:
  • Exposure to outside weather conditions with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise intensity levels ranging from moderate to loud and occasional to frequent time periods and frequent electrical shock hazards.
  1. Hazards:
  • Furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

                              

EXAMPLES OF ASSIGNED WORK AREAS:  

Elko County School District facilities - schools (i.e., classrooms, cafeterias, offices, boiler rooms, facility roof tops, etc.), construction sites, etc.

This position requires employees to work in and around students and staff. Employees must be professional and use proper decorum, language and exhibit a positive attitude in dealing with those who are essentially our customers.

 

Employees must be willing and able to adapt to changes in the work environment, managing competing demands, and often must change their approach or method to best fit a given situation; able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.

 

This position requires journeymen to work at various locations without direct supervision. Journeymen must be depended upon to follow instructions, keep commitments and take responsibility for their own actions.

EXAMPLES OF EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES USED TO PERFORM TASKS:

Various ladders, analog and digital temperature analyzers, eye and hearing protection equipment, oxy-acetylene welding/cutting equipment, megohm meters, analog and digital volt ohm/amp meters, motorized forklifts, chain hoists, mobile hand held radios, hand and power tools, etc.
