Teacher – LEAD LITERACY SPECIALIST

Division: Licensed Personnel

Classification: Certified

Terms of Employment: 9/12 Months

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

This is a salaried position assigned to the Licensed Employee Salary Schedule.

This is a grant funded position, contingent upon continued funding.

*May require travel to multiple schools/locations*

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The Lead Literacy Specialist will engage teachers in a professional dialogue about teaching practices in order to improve and accelerate student achievement through quality curriculum and instruction. The Lead Literacy Specialist is expected to assist classroom teachers and other instructional staff in developing the skills, tools, techniques and capacity to effectively teach reading and writing to students. Interaction and communication between the Lead Literacy Specialist, administrators and teacher are confidential and teacher evaluation is never a part of the process. This person reports directly to the school site administrator.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Support all teachers in creating rigorous, standards-aligned engaging classrooms where all learners can thrive.
  2. Ensure the opportunity for all students to learn in a supportive environment.
  3. Create and maintain a positive, orderly, and academically focused learning condition in the instructional environment.
  4. Develop and implement the Components of an Effective Reading/Language Arts Lesson for instruction.
  5. Analyze student progress and provide appropriate instruction.
  6. Ensure assessment regulations and guidelines are followed at all times.
  7. Work professionally with administrators, staff, parents, and community.
  8. Read and implement the Nevada State Literacy Plan.
  9.    Will receive specific training as to the philosophy, purpose, goals, model, evaluation, and job descriptions of the program.
  10. Lead Professional Development in the areas of Reading/Language Arts.
  11. Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff.
  12. Are not involved in the evaluation of the performance of the teacher.
  13. Familiarity working with Nevada Academic Content Standards-aligned curriculum and materials.
  14. Willingness to work non-standard hours.
  15. Willingness to travel with in Elko County School District.
  16. Meet with Lead Literacy Specialist Team weekly to collaborate and maintain ECSD vision.
  17. Participate in professional development opportunities designated for the Lead Literacy Coach.
  18. Provide parental literacy education and support.
  19. The primary goal of a Lead Literacy Specialist is to impact student success by increasing Tier 1 Instruction.
  20. Participate in other job-related duties and activities related to the position as assigned.

 

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and ability to provide instruction in an elementary classroom.
  2. Work cooperatively with students, parents, peers, administration, and community members.
  3. Guide the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals.
  4. Establish and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  5. Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff.
  6. Lead Professional Development in the areas of Reading/Language Arts.
  7. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy.
  8. Maintain and improve professional competence.
  9. Communicate effectively both written and orally.
  10. Serve as a literacy coach/mentor.
  11. Are not involved in the evaluation of the performance of the teacher.
  12. Willingness to work non-standard hours.
  13. Willingness to travel with in Elko County School District.
  14. Meet with Lead Literacy Specialist Team weekly to collaborate and maintain ECSD vision.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Training: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the candidate with the necessary licenses, certifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities

 

Licenses and Certifications:

  1. Must possess or be able to acquire a Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education.
  2. Certified in relevant subject area.
  3. Must meet Highly Qualified Teacher requirements upon hire (if applicable).
