Position:  Interpreter for the deaf and Hard of Hearing

 

 

Classification: Unlicensed Staff

Terms of Employment: Full Time – 194 Days

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

This is an unlicensed position assigned to the classified salary schedule.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under  immediate  supervision  of  a  licensed  professional,  performs  a  variety  of  interpreter’s duties  related  to classroom instruction and communication.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

1.                    Assists professional in the instructional program and throughout school.

2.                    Assists professional in maintaining discipline and encouraging acceptable behavior.

3.                    Assists professional in taking attendance, correcting papers, and presenting instructional

                   materials.

4.                    May type and duplicate bulletins, instructional materials, schedules, correspondence, 

                   reports and a variety of classroom and school material.

5.                    May assist with the loading and unloading of buses to insure that students board the proper

                   bus.

6.                    May assist students with personal care and sanitary needs.

7.                    May assist in feeding students by preparing, distributing, ordering and administering snacks

                   and special lunches.

8.                    May operate a variety of office machines.

9.                    May assist and actively participate with physical education activities.

10.                 May contribute to reports on student progress, behavior and performance.

11.                 May keep records and administer medication to students per parent authorization.

12.                 May assist students with daily assigned activities.

13.                 May perform CPR/AED, when necessary.

14.                 Completes standard district/school forms.

15.                 Conforms to safety standards as prescribed.

16.                 Performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.

17.                 Assist students and school personnel in understanding the role and responsibilities of the

                 interpreter.

18.                 Explanation to the teachers of what an interpreter does and how the deaf/hard of hearing

                 students utilizes them.

19.                 Assists the professional to ensure that the deaf/hard of hearing student is fully included in 

                 the classroom activities.

20.                 Assists the professional in seating arrangements, positioning of the interpreter, lighting an

                 effects of visual distractions on the student ,  and assure there is a clear view of both the

                 teacher and the interpreter at all times for the student.

21.                 Interpret all class lectures, discussions, demonstrations, video/audio tapes, announcements

                  and conversations occurring in the classroom.

22.                 Before an assignment, obtain copies of the professional’s edition of textbooks, professional’s

                 lesson plans, audio or videotapes or any other materials that will be used in the teacher’s

                 class presentation.

23.                 Review all materials before the assignments and, if clarification is needed, ask the

                  professional.

24.                 Interpret/transliterate the content of the class in the mode of communication and language

                  level of the student.

25.                 Repeat/rephrase or clarify information given by the professional to convey the exact

                 meaning/intent of the lesson.

26.                 Familiarize the professional with the student’s mode of communication and language level.

27.                 Accurately voice the student’s responses, questions and comments.

28.                 Ask for clarification if the speaker is not understood.

29.                 Ensure that the professional communicates directly with student.

30.                 As a related service provider, participate in the student’s IEP meeting and discuss any issues

                 related to communication and the use of an interpreter.

31.                 Provide tutoring services.

32.                 Discuss test-taking strategies with the classroom professional.

33.                 Establish a professional relationship with the student and encourage the student to develop

                 self-advocacy skills.

34.                 Keep all information concerning the student confidential.

35.                 Report to the administration any incident/conversation that may cause danger to others.

36.                 Follow school policies ensuring the safety of all students in school.

37.                 Remain in the classroom for the entire class time.

38.                 Be familiar with and adhere to the concepts explained in the EIPPA Guidelines of Professional

                 Conduct for Educational Interpreters.

39.                 Adhere to the State of Nevada Department of Health and Human Services Aging and

                 Disability Services Division Code Conduct for Educational Interpreters K-12.

40.                 Report to Special Services or DHH Professional when the DHH student is absent. Contact

                 DHH Professional for responsibilities for the term of student’s absence.

41.                 Notify the school and Special Services when absent.

42.                 Supports the student’s social interactions and development.

43.                 Indicates who is speaking and when there has been a change in speaker.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Position Expectations):

1.                    Knowledge of CPR/AED and universal precautions.

2.                    Ability to deal with unusual behavior and crisis situations.

3.                    Ability to work effectively with all types of students.

4.                    Ability to learn and apply school rules, regulations and procedures. 

5.                    Ability to interpret and apply oral and written instruction.

6.                    Ability to maintain confidentiality.

7.                    Ability to perform several different tasks and determine priorities.

8.                    Ability to plan and organize work.

9.                    Ability to perform routine record keeping.

10.                 Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, parents/guardians, and the public.

11.                 Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High school graduation or other equivalent, (i.e., GED, college, technical or trade school transcript, foreign equivalency, etc.). and a minimum passing score of 460 on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) para-pro assessment. A score of at least 75% on the EIPA Written test.
  • Associate Degree from an accredited college or university; completed 48 semester hours of credit from a college or university; or a minimum passing score of 460 on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) para-pro assessment.

 

Licenses and Certificates:

·       Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment level determined by score:

·       Apprentice – 3.0

·       Intermediate – 3.1-3.9

·       Advanced – 4.0-5.0

 

Advanced Educational Interpreters must also have the following:

Hold a current NIC or Ed: K-12 Certification through Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or

a. current CI, CT, CSC, MCSC, or NAD III – V certification

b. Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment of 4.0-5.0

c. Educational Sign Skills Evaluation (ESSE) score of 5.0

  • In Nevada that all interpreters must be registered with the state. (NRS 656.A.)

 

EXAMPLES OF ASSIGNED WORK AREAS:

Elko County School District schools (health offices, playgrounds, cafeterias, classrooms, locker rooms), etc.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

1.     Strength:

  • Sedentary to heavy - exert force of 10-100 lbs., occasionally/ frequently/constantly.  May involve negligible to significant stand/walk/push/pull/carry.

2.     Physical Demands:

  • May involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking and hearing, reaching, handling, and fingering. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Involves hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.

3.     Vision:

  • Frequent near acuity and depth perception; occasional far acuity. Vision to read printed materials, VDT screens, or other monitoring devices.

4.     Environmental Conditions:

  • Exposure to climate controlled office settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods.

5.     Hazards:

  • Furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

 

EXAMPLES OF EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES USED TO PERFORM TASKS:

Computers, printers, typewriters, fax machines, calculators, copy machines, telephones, school supplies, etc.
